The temple of fire worshippers Ateshgah, located on the Absheron peninsula on the outskirts of Surakhani village, 30 km from the centre of Baku, was revered in different times by Zoroastrians, Hindus and Sikhs. The current constructions of the temple date back to the XVII century. As a result of excavations, far more ancient artifacts were discovered here. The pentagonal complex has an open courtyard with temple-altar in the center which was the place of pilgrimage for worshippers. By the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ateshgah was declared a State historical-architectural reserve. This open-air museum has been recently restored and different workshops and souvenir galleries are open for the visitors of the temple.

One of the world’s only still-burning fire temples, Ateshgah – The Temple of Eternal Fire – has been a religious site revered by Hindus and Zoroastrians from around the first century AD, or even earlier. Flames still burn in its magical central hearth-altar which was rebuilt in the 17th-18th century with side flues and sone inscriptions. That’s set in a fortified pentagonal courtyard around which former pilgrim cells are built into the impressively fortified surrounding walls, now forming a fascinating museum. The complex is located 30 km from Baku on the outskirts of Surakhani, an overgrown village of the Absheron Peninsula. Ateshgah tours commonly make an additional visit to Yanardag, another curious fire phenomenon where burning natural gas blazes continuously on a hillside near Digah. Azerbaijan has been historically known as the Land of Fire because of its rich oil and gas resources. The natural fire that have been blazing in various parts of the country for millennia have greatly influenced the beliefs and traditions of the local people and has been celebrated in works of literature and art. An example of this natural phenomenon is found 25 kilometres from Baku, in a place known as Yanardag located in the village of Mahammadli. The natural gas that seeps onto the surface gives this mountain (whose name translates as ‘burning mountain’) its famous ‘burning’ look. In order to protect Yanardag and attract tourists here, this area was declared a historical, cultural and natural reserve in 2007. Today Yanardagh reserve is a favourite destination for tourists visiting the country. The mountain appears to be covered in tongues of flame from its foot to its peak, resembling red tulips. At first, such an unusual sight may give a strange impression, but this feeling turns into fascination upon watching the fire majestically seep out of the mountain core.

National Art Museum of Azerbaijan is the biggest art museum of Azerbaijan. It was founded in 1936 in Baku and in 1943 was named after Rustam Mustafayev, a prominent Azerbaijani scenic designer and theater artist. The museum consists of two buildings standing next to each other. The museum’s total collection includes over 15,000 artworks. There are over 3,000 items in 60 rooms on permanent display. About 12,000 items are kept in storage. The museum changes the exhibits periodically so that more of these artworks can be displayed temporarily.

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was created under the Decree No. 130 dated March 13, 1967 of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. From 1967 to 1993, the museum was called the Azerbaijan State Museum of Carpet and Folk Applied Arts, from 1993 to 2014 – State Museum of Carpet and Applied Arts named after Latif Karimov, from 2014 to the present time the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. At the time of establishing, it was the only museum that was dedicated to the art of carpet weaving. The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of the carpet weaving art, which are the Azerbaijan’s national heritage.

The palace was the former residence of the rulers of the Shirvanshahs. It is a complex where, in addition to the palace itself, can also be found a courtyard of the Diwankhana, the courthouse, the Shirvanshahs’ burial vault, the palace mosque of 1441 with its minaret, the bathhouse and the mausoleum of the court scholar, Sayid Yahya Bakuvi. The palace complex was built in the period from the XIII to the XVI century. On the palace itself, no inscriptions have survived. Therefore, the time of its construction is determined by the dates on the inscriptions on various architectural monuments, which relate to the palace complex. In 1964, the palace complex was declared a museum-preserve. In 2000, a unique architectural and cultural ensemble, along with the fortified walls enclosed by the historic part of the city and the Maiden Tower, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Shirvanshahs Palace is considered one of the pearls of the architecture of Azerbaijan.

The museum is located in Ilyas Afandiyev Street, close to “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve.
Beyler mosque is located in Icheri Sheher near the Shirvanshahs Palace Complex. It was built in 1895. During the construction of the mosque, Mohammad Hashim al-Baqui’s sons Hachi-Baba and Hachi Jawad, as well as the famous billionaire Agha-Murtuza Muhtarow, Hadrat Ibrahim Shirvani, Mir Ali En-Nagi, Mir Taga, and Master-méréid Seid Hussain were also present at the mosque. It is built in the heart of the ancient mosque, combining the coherent principles of European, Eastern, and even universal wisdom. Repair and restoration works are being carried out in the mosque since April 2014 on the order of the Icherisheher TMQ. In October, 2015, the repair and restoration works of the mosque were completed, and the renovation of the mosque was replaced by wooden “David star” on the wooden window in the mosque windows.

The house-museum of Azim Azimzade is a memorial museum dedicated to the Azerbaijani artist and caricaturist, people’s artist of the Azerbaijan SSR. It is located in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. In the museum personal belongings of Azim Azimzade, documents and photographs, artistic works are exhibited. The museum was inaugurated in 1968. The museum was created in a small apartment where the artist lived most of his life. The old house was completely useless. Baku Museum of Miniature Books is the only museum of miniature books in the world, settled in the old part of Baku, called Old City. The museum started its operation on April 2, 2002. Exhibits in the museum were collected by Zarifa Salahova (the sister of Tahir Salahov) over the period of 30 years. Her collection consists of more than 6500 books from 64 different countries. The museum was opened to public viewing with the hope of promoting childhood literacy.

Azerbaijan State J. Jabbarli Theatre Museum named after Jafar Jabbarli reflects the professional theatre history of Azerbaijan. In 1934, the issue of establishing such a museum was raised at the Republican conference by theater workers. The museum was organized in the same year in the building of the Azerbaijan State Drama Theatre. In fact, this exhibition was the foundation of a future museum. According to eyewitnesses, Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev, the great writers who cut the opening ribbon of the exhibition, said: “Long live the Azerbaijani theatre!”

The symbol of Baku, Maiden Tower was included into the list of World Cultural Heratage of UNESCO in December of 2000. Maiden Tower, erected at the coast of the Caspian Sea preserved its magnificence till our days. The Tower, which was included into the fortification system of Baku, was called “Maiden Tower” for its inaccessibility. The exact date of construction of the Maiden Tower is unknown. In the 12th century the Maiden Tower became part of the defensive system of Baku and was the main stronghold of the Baku fortress – one of the most powerful fortresses of the Shirvanshahs. But later studies of the Maiden Tower completely refuted all previous assumptions about its defensive purpose. In the XVIII-XIX centuries, the Maiden Tower was used as a beacon. On the facade of the tower from the entrance side there is a stone with an inscription in Kufic handwriting which says: «The Tower of Masud, the son of Dawood.» Since 2010, with the aim of popularizing the Maiden Tower, the International Festival of Art «The Maiden’s Tower» is held, in which artists from various countries adorn the tower with mock-ups.
